This course will give you basic knowledge of biblical issues in general, and of the three subjects of Old Testament, New Testament, and Jewish Studies in particular.
It will also teach you a number of basic tools for the synchronic reading of texts, using a coherent examples from the Old Testament, the New Testament, and Jewish Midrashim.
The course consists of three parts. The first part provides general basic knowledge. You will learn about the canons of the Bible, the topography of the land of the Bible, and its Umwelt. It will also give you a historical overview of the biblical area (c. 2000 BCE - c. 150 CE).
The second part of the course deals with specific issues from the three disciplines of Old Testament, New Testament, and Jewish Studies. The Old Testament part will discuss Torah / Law, prophetism, and wisdom literature. The New Testament part will focus on the synoptic problem, and on synchrony and diachrony. The Jewish Studies part will introduce the general terminology of Halakha, Aggadah, Midrash, Mishnah, and Talmud.
Part three of the course focuses on reading biblical texts. In Old Testament exegesis, you will acquire reading techniques such as defining a pericope and structuring a text. In New Testament exegesis, you will learn about the Wirkungsgeschichte of Old Testament texts in texts from the New Testament era. You will also learn how to use a synopsis and a concordance. Jewish Studies will introduce you to reading various Midrashim. It will familiarize you with Jewish literature and with the Wirkungsgeschichte of biblical texts in the various Jewish genres.
