This is the first of three connected courses. At the end of the full program you will be able to read and translate New Testament Greek (i.e. Koine, or Hellenistic Greek) and  early Christian Greek texts of an average level of difficulty. During this first course you will learn the basic morphology of Koine Greek, enabling you to translate short and easy texts from the New Testament with the aid of a grammar book, a dictionary, and additional notes.
During this first course you will study the morphology of New Testament Greek: the alphabet and pronunciation; the declension of nouns (substantives, adjectives) and pronouns; the conjugation of verbs. You will acquire a basic vocabulary of c. 130 words that occur frequently  in New Testament Greek, and practice using a dictionary. You will also study some basic but very important features of Greek syntax: articles and prepositions as structure markers; sentence patterns; participles. Exercises and reading material are all taken from, or based on, the New Testament.
This course is designed to enable you to read and understand easy texts from the New Testament after a single semester of study. This will require some memorization of vocabulary and paradigms, in addition to weekly assignments (exercises, preparatory reading). Regular class attendance and solid motivation are strongly recommended.
