The goal of this course is to provide an overview of how minds and intelligence work, in humans, animals, and machines through integrating insights across the broad array of fields in Cognitive Science. At the end of this course will be able to:
  • Critically evaluate evidence and claims from the scientific literature.
  • Differentiate the focus and methods from the the wide array of subfields that comprise Cognitive Science.
  • Identify the major contributions and insights derived not only from those subfields but through integrating them together in multidisciplinary research.
  • Integrate information from multiple sub-disciplines to better understand how minds work.
  • Appreciate the importance of computational and mathematical models in quantifying theoretical predictions and integrating across disciplines and agents.
  • Identify the connection between how minds work, the bodies they inhabit, and the social context in which they are imbedded.
Content
Cognitive Science is the multidisciplinary study of how minds work. Cognitive scientists come together from many different research areas to engage in an interdisciplinary attack to understand the nature of intelligence, memory, attention, imagery, language, reasoning, decision making, morality, and perception. In this course we will overview how cognitive science fundamentally rests on integrating methods and concepts from a number of disciplines, including the traditional disciplines of philosophy, psychology, computer science, neuroscience, biology, linguistics, and anthropology, as well as more recently integrated disciplines such as economics, education, mathematics, and engineering. We will discuss the philosophical perspectives, the methodologies, and the major findings of these sub-fields and how they can be integrated to understand both how we as well as how other agents (animals and machines) think. No background in any of these disciplines is assumed, and this course is intended to serve as an introduction to the unique multidisciplinary approach to studying problems of mind that Cognitive Science represents.
