This course aims to increase student’s practical as well as scientific insight into HR studies. After following this course, students should be able to ’do HR with an attitude’ (Ulrich, 2008). The first and foremost learning objective therefore is to learn to assess, discuss, and apply research, theory, and concepts of HRS while paying explicit attention to practical and actual issues in the field. A second objective is to learn to be aware of process issues in teams/projects targeted at HR. In more detail, the course has the following targets:
- Development of analytical sensitivity to the influence of specific situations in which a company must operate, including both internal and external factors, on HRM.
- Awareness of the ways in which these situational constraints modify the designs of the HR/Personnel function, and how HR can respond to them.
- Knowledge of and insight into current topics in HRM.
- Developing skills for purposeful and effective co-operation in a team, such as:
- Team based problem solving
- Argumentative skills and techniques
- Communication skills
- Chairing and facilitating a group learning session
- Sensitivity to team dynamics
- Enthusiasm and dedication to the subject, regardless of your working environment.
- Positive contribution to team dynamics
The course consists of three consecutive parts.
8 lectures of 2 hours, 8 seminars of 3 hours, and 2 practicals of 4 hours
The course starts with building a collective starting ‘knowledge’ point for students. This is achieved by studying chapters 2-5 of the book by Paauwe & Farndale (2017), Strategy, HRM, and Performance (2nd edition), which integrates the knowledge from several subfields that are covered in the Bachelor/Premaster program in HR studies.
Part 1 includes two lectures of 2 hours and will be finalized with an oral exam in the second week, on the basis of Paauwe and Farndale’s book. Students prepare a 10-15 minutes presentation for the oral exam and write a one-page summary of their presentation.
The second part of the course is devoted to content-related main themes in HR studies. This part includes five 2-hour lectures and five 3-hour seminars. These seminars are prepared, structured and chaired by student teams. The other teams write essays about that week’s theme and hand this in before the seminar. The essays are written from either an ethical or a multi-level/multi-actor perspective. There will be one additional lecture to introduce these two perspectives for the essays.
Part 3 of this course targets the development of students’ social and professional skills. This part consists of two training sessions (practicum sessions: ‘Talent-check’) in small groups (10-15 students): one at the start of the first semester (teaching block 1/block 3 depending on your starting point), and one at the start of the second semester (teaching block 3/block 1 depending on your starting point). Coaches of the Tilburg University Career Center will facilitate these trainings. In addition, a 3-hour Q&A meeting with professionals will be organized in teaching block 3 or 4 . As these sessions are not graded, attendance of all three sessions (Talent check I, Talent check II, Q&A meeting) is obligatory. Only students who follow the Extended Master – International Track can get the opportunity to compensate for missing one or two of these sessions by means of extra assignments.
