This course consists of two different parts:

  1. Part 1: Construction of questionnaires (construct question(naire)s to operationalize constructs)
  2. Part 2: Analyse questionnaires (use statistical procedures to determine the quality of a questionnaire)
In the course, the followings techniques will be discussed both on a theoretical level and an applied level (e.g., performing analyses in SPSS and being able to interpret the resulting output):
  1. Determining the relationship between two variables (covariance & correlation)
  2. Reliability analysis
  3. Validity analysis (e.g., Principal Component analysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor analysis)
After this course, students will be able to:
  • Operationalize (dimensions of) latent constructs and design questionnaire to make them measurable
  • Calculate and interpret correlation and covariance (by hand and by using SPSS) of two variables
  • Apply the rules for the construction of items of a questionnaire
  • Determine the reliability of a questionnaire (by hand)
  • Perform a reliability analysis in SPSS and interpret the resulting output
  • Perform a validity analysis based on the 4 forms of validity discussed in this course
  • Evaluate scientific literature based on the form of factor analysis that was applied
  • Run a factor analysis and SPSS and interpret the resulting output
  • Evaluate if a factor analysis can be performed and what form of rotation (e.g., (non-)orthogonal/OBLIMIN or VARIMAX) should be applied

The grading of the course consists of two parts: the course exam (graded 1-10) and the SPSS practical (graded pass-fail). A student passes the course and receives the corresponding ects when he/she is graded a 6 or higher in the course exam and a pass in the SPSS practical. Both partial results remain valid after the academic year in which they were obtained

Tutorial sessions & lab sessions:
Though participation in the tutorial sessions and lab session is voluntary, students are advised to participate in both. During tutorials, there is time to deepen the understanding of the material taught in the lectures and to work on assignments comparable to exam questions. In the lab sessions, students will get the opportunity to practice for the SPSS test at the end of the course.

Concepts and techniques that are subsequently discussed are; association and correlation, measurement and measurement scales, reliability, validity, construction of questionnaires, exploratory factor analysis, structural equation modelliing, confirmatory factor analysis.
