After completing this course you will:
- Be able to recognize different types of information systems and technologies used in organizations;
- Be able to explain how information systems influence business performance (by enhancing business data, business relations, and business processes);
- Have knowledge of the innovative potential of ICT for e-commerce, inter-organizational relations, digital markets, products, services, and business processes;
- Be able to apply concepts from economics theory to explore e-commerce, including transaction costs, network externalities, social networks, (im)perfect digital markets, segmentation, price dispersion, targeting and positioning;
- Be able to apply concepts from business theories to explore e-commerce, including business process design, return on investment, strategic advantage, and industry competitive environment;
- Have knowledge of concepts from information systems theory, including Internet standards and protocols, cloud computing, wireless technologies;
- Have knowledge of ethical and societal concepts, including intellectual property, privacy, information rights, rights management, and governance;
- Be able to use a Business Process Modeling tool (BPMN) to analyze business processes;
- Be able to use a Business Value Modeling tool (E3 Value) to analyze relations among business actors in a value network.
Since 2012, the course has a new set-up since it is the introduction to the Information Management Minor that can be chosen by IBA students in their third (BSc) year. The Information Management Minor consists of three elective courses and provides easy access for IBA students to enroll in the MSc program Information Management.
Please note, that all IBA courses are only open to IBA students. It is not possible to use this course as an elective for other programs.
The Information Management course focuses on how managers in business organizations use information technologies (ICT) to support and enhance their business. On one hand, ICT is used to support business processes and managers. On the other hand, ICT can be used for business innovations and to change products, services, strategies, processes, and inter-organizational relations in organizational networking. Business managers and IT managers aim to realize and maintain the best set of ICT applications to be able to support as well as to innovate business activities.
The course uses the latest edition of the Laudon and Traver book titled "E-Commerce". Chapters of the book will be covered in weekly lectures (by Smits, Hulstijn, and guest lecturers).
A key part of this course are the two group assignments focusing on value analysis (E3) and business process analysis (BPMN). By doing the two assignments you learn how to specify business requirments for successful IT and business model innovations.
