The objectives of the course are:
  1. to come up with interesting, original and feasible research ideas;
  2. to gain experience in collecting & describing research data and results;
  3. to improve the design and set up of an empirical research by controlling for causality and endogeneity;
  4. to provide exposure to and get hands-on experience with existing and new implementable research techniques through readings, lectures and method applications;
  5. to validate your research properly and replicate the findings;
  6. to apply and practice new research techniques and exercise all learnings through an empirical research project (term paper).

Resit & repeater rules:
The course grade is based on the weekly assignments (30%), class participation (10%), and the term paper (60%). Students pass the course if their weighted grade > 5.5. If students fail, they can redo or improve the term paper. Grades of the assignments and class participation will be reused to determine the final grade. These rules also hold for students that want to improve their grade during the resit. However, mind that the grade for a resit term paper can never pass a 7.5.
This course will introduce students to a variety of skills and techniques to prepare them to set up and execute high quality empirical research in the field of business. It aims to make students familiar with and teaches them how to deal with a number of challenges academic researchers in various business domains are typically confronted with at different stages of their research (study setup, data analysis, and validation phase).
The focus is on the application of these methods in scientific business research. Therefore, the techniques will be illustrated with research published in major academic journals, and course participants will also apply and practice several of these research methods to their own data.
Topics that will be covered:
  1. identifying substantive research topics;
  2. various types of data collection and data presentation techniques;
  3. issues about causality and endogeneity in designing a research study;
  4. introduction to several state-of-the art methods commonly used in business research;
  5. validations and replications in business research.
