The goal of the course is to introduce Research Master students in OR to possible PhD research topics and potential PhD supervisors. The students have to read papers from the scientific literature, do selected assignments on these papers and present individual lectures on them.
All non-CentER students should ask formal permission from the Director of Graduate Studies in Business BEFORE the start of the course.
Please send your request for permission including grade list, CV and motivation letter to CentER Graduate School at email@example.com. Note that asking permission is not a formality.
During about eight weeks potential PhD supervisors present seminal papers from their respective research fields during three-hour lectures. Students will have to complete an assignment on each of these weeks. Assignments can include writing referee reports, deriving theoretical results related to the topics presented, and/or writing computer programs in MATLAB related to the issues discussed in the class. During one course week attention is directed towards what can be expected in becoming and being a PhD student, together with a discussion on general ethical and integrity issues of being a scientist. Finally one course week will provide guidelines and suggestions regarding scientific writing and presentation skills.
Weekly assignments (50% in total) and individual presentations (50%) in the final course weeks. During the presentations each student will explain the main results and ideas of a scientific paper of his/her choice.
All required research papers will be made available via Canvas during the course.
