Students will gain knowledge about the psychological processes that influence (business) communication. A major focus will be on the effects of psychological biases and emotions. At the end of the course, the student is able to...
… process and reproduce relevant ideas and details from important scientific articles about the influence of psychological processes on communication.
… describe factors that influence successful communication (e.g., linguistic biases, egocentrism, restrictions of CMC) and describe theories about the influence of emotions on communication (e.g. EASI, AIM).
.. describe how psychological processes influence communication in different areas (negotiations, inter-group conflict, health communication, leadership, electronic communication).
… critically review scientific articles on the topic. This includes evaluating articles with respect to their reliability and validity, to view findings in a broader perspective and relate different findings to each other.
… apply the knowledge from the course to a practical question and present concrete ideas on how to improve business communication.

The course relies heavily on group discussions about the literature. The student needs to prepare each lecture by reading the according articles (around 30 pages). There will be a knowledge quiz about the articles at the beginning of each lecture. Students will choose a topic from within the course on which they are the experts. For that topic, they present an additional article, lead the discussion, and present a practical application. There is also a written final exam. This approach leads to a high workload but also a very deep understanding of the topics.
The final grade will consist of the average of the grades for the knowledge quizzes (35%), the grade for the group work (30%), and the grade of the written exam (35%).

Please note that the course organization and evaluation may be subject to change depending on the number of students enrolled for the course. Changes will be announced in class and via Canvas at the start of the course.
The course load (6 ECTS = 168 hours) is as follows:
13 lectures a 2 hours                       = 26 hours
Group work                                        = 30 hours
Exam preparation                            = 16 hours
Reading for 10 lectures                 = 70 hours (7 hours per lecture, estimated reading speed is 4 pages per hour = 28 pages per lecture)

Labor Market

Successful communication is an important skill for both professional and personal relationships. In this course, we will discuss how the scientific knowledge about psychological processes can be used on the work floor, for example, when selecting team members, by preventing biases from influencing our conversations and decisions, getting the best result out of negotiations, and achieving to be liked by others.
