After having completed the course:
    • Students are able to describe the characteristics and the steps involved in quantitative and qualitative research using the correct terminology, and they are able to characterize how a design phase can complement the research process.
    • Students are able to distinguish general empirical cycles in research and additional ways, such as design and implementation, occurring in artificial intelligence, data science, cognitive science and computer science.
    • Students are able to identify the strength and weaknesses of different methods and choose the best method for a given research question. They can evaluate decisions made in the design of experimental and non-experimental methods.
    • Students are able to define the meaning of a variable, identify its measurement level and its role in a design (e.g. independent, dependent).
    • Students are able to evaluate ethical issues in research.
    • Students are able to characterize the reliability and validity of research setup.
    • Students are able to interpret research data, and are able to identify various ways to perform simple, descriptive data analysis, and to display data graphically and coherently.
Students will acquire a number of basic scientific skills. The overall goal of this course is to teach students how research papers (reports, theses, etc.) come about in a scientific context. Students will be taught how to read a scientific paper in their area of expertise and distinguish the various elements of a typical research project (research questions, literature, results, etc.). The course features lectures which will cover topics in the research process, such as coming up with a research problem, constructing a research design, identifying variables, data analysis and presenting results. The lectures will strike a balance between covering general research processes and tailoring specific elements to the CSAI context. During the entire course, additional exercises to practice various aspects of the course will be provided through Canvas, with which students can further study particular aspects themselves. The course features various reading materials, including a main book, several chapters from other books, and articles which will be provided during the course. The course features two partial exams in which knowledge and understanding of the reading materials is tested. In addition, to pass the course, an infoskills module provided by the university library needs to be completed.
