After the successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
- Define ‘public governance’ as well as related core concept such as ‘government’, ‘institution’, ‘governance mechanisms’, ‘public and semi-public organizations’, ‘network’, and the like.
- Describe relevant theories of governance from the three disciplinary perspectives of public administration, economics, and law
- Identify public governance traditions
- Discuss the relevance of studying public governance practices from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective
- Collect, select and process relevant information quickly and efficiently
Ever since the early 2000’s ‘governance’ is one of the most used concepts in public administration. This course introduces students to the core concepts and traditions of public governance and discusses their relationships. It also introduces participants to the core theories of governance that have been developed in various field-relevant academic disciplines, and to the ideas and practice of comparative and interdisciplinary research on governance. The emphasis, here, is on the disciplinary perspectives of public administration, economics, and law.
In a series of interactive workshops that address contemporary governance challenges, various staff members will introduce each of the three perspectives and discuss their relevance to the study of real-world governance practices.
Students will work on a group assignment in which they analyze and compare governance practices across countries using core theories of governance of each of the three perspectives.
