After writing your thesis you will be able to:

  • Formulate a research question and problem statement, to motivate the problem statement, and to specify the research approach;
  • Indicate the scientific and societal relevance of the research question;
  • Select and review the appropriate literature and to describe and explain relevant theories in an understandable, structured and convincing manner;
  • Position the problem at hand in relation to the theory and to present the conceptual framework for the research in a correct and appealing way, including explanation and operatonalization of the constructs;
  • Describe the methods used in the research in a clear manner (description of methods), to justify the choice for certain methods (justification of methods), and to use the appropriate quantitative and/or qualitative techniques to collect data and to answer the research question;
  • Present the results in a structured manner, including correct use of tables, figures, diagrams and schemata, and to use the results to make a clear contribution to solving the general problem at hand;
  • Formulate clear recommendations and specific actions and initiatives (if the thesis was written for an external client organization), to write a clear report (meeting required specifications) without (too many) typographical and grammatical errors, and to present the report clearly for a mixed audience in a limited amount of time;

Details on how to select a topic for your thesis and the requirements for a thesis are given on Blackboard. To find these, you must enroll as soon as possible in the Blackboard course MSc Thesis Information Management (390306) and follow the instructions on how to write a thesis proposal and how to submit your proposal in the thesis-management-system. Using this system is mandatory (since December 2012) for all students doing the MSc Information Management, including IMMIT, IMSE and other students supervised by Information Management professors, also from earlier cohorts (starting years).

A thesis supervisor will be assigned to you by Thesis Coordinator Dr. Carol Ou as soon as she has approved your proposal.
The department will conduct the plagiarism check for the final version of your thesis.

Resit and repeater rules
Please keep in mind that there are 2 inflow moments with associated deadlines. If you miss the deadline or do not pass, you get a maximum of 8 weeks rework. If you miss the rework deadline or do not pass, you will have to start the thesis all over again, with a new proposal in the next semester. You will get a new supervisor and new deadline.
Only in case of very special personal circumstances (death of a near relative, severe illness) acknowledged by Deans of Students, students can ask the Examination Committee for an exception and try and get an extended deadline. Financial problems or work are not considered special personal circumstances.

Required Prerequisites

Students need to have obtained sufficient credit points before they may start the Master thesis project. The amount of credit points is checked and evaluated by the thesis management system. In case of any questions you should ask your Program Coordinator.
The course "MSc Thesis Information Management" consists of individual supervision. This means that a supervisor will be assigned to you and that (s)he will supervise you during the process of doing research and writing your thesis.
