Aims
This course focuses on theories and research in personnel psychology, and their applications within organizations. At the end of the course, you are expected to
  1. have knowledge and understanding of important topics in personnel psychology
  2. be able to reflect upon the scientific literature and its application within organizations.
Specifics
This course will be run as a practical. Students will prepare for classes by reading the literature. A number of classes will start with a quiz (based on the assigned literature). In addition, students will work on two group and one individual assignments. The final grade will be a weighted average of the quizzes (25%), group (25%) and individual (50%) assignments.
If students do not pass anyone of the assignments, there will be an opportunity to redo the assignment(s). The date and location of the resit(s) are decided on in consultation with the teacher.
It is possible to take a resit for the separate elements that make up the final grade (i.e., all quizes combined, the individual and the group assignment).
The quizzes will be replaced by a new assignment. Students who would like to obtain a higher grade for the quizzes have to conduct a literature study on a subject that is related to one of the topics discussed in the practicals. The results of the literature study will be reported in a paper. Students have one month to complete this assignment. Students who would like to take a resit have to contact the teacher for additional instructions.
Students who would like to obtain a higher grade for the individual and/or group assignment have to redo the assignment(s) on new topics and in a new organization. Groups have one month to complete this assignment. Groups who would like to take a resit have to contact the teacher for additional instructions.
NB. The grades that are obtained are only valid in the academic year 2018-2019. If a student does not pass the course during this year, he/she has to retake the whole course (including all assignments and exams) in the next academic year.
Content
Broadly speaking, personnel psychology is concerned with the fit between the individual and the work environment. Having 'the right person at the right place' is thought to result in positive work outcomes such as increased performance, job satisfaction, and employee well-being. Accordingly, topics that will be addressed in this course are, among others, person-environment fit, personnel selection, employee development, and careers.
