Aims
The bachelor thesis is a proof of scientific expertise at bachelor level. Students have to produce individually a theoretical-empirical paper .
In the paper, students a) formulate relevant and innovative research questions; b) derive hypotheses based on existing theories and empirical studies; c) test the hypotheses using existing survey data and apply adequate methodology and statistical analyses; d) draw general conclusions and discuss the consequences for the research questions and hypotheses. Research questions are descriptive and explanatory. Students use either the European Values Study (EVS), the Netherlands Life-Course Longitudinal Survey (NELLS), or data from another large-scale survey.
In the first stage of the course students are trained in writing empirical-theoretical papers. Students write one training paper, which has to be passed to be selected for the bachelor thesis.
During the second stage of the course, students work, under supervision, on their bachelor thesis. They analyze one of the existing survey data sets made available by the supervisors and test hypotheses using advanced statistical analyses. All steps in the analyses have to be taken: i.e., operationalization, selection of units of analysis, descriptive analyses and multivariate, explanatory analyses. Students describe the results, draw conclusions and discuss the consequences for their research questions and hypotheses.
The course ends with two mini-symposiums where students present their papers.
